The Apartheid Archive Project

Apartheid, Geographies and Bodies of Water: The Consequences

“Narratives, Nostalgia, Nationhoods”

The 3rd Apartheid Archive Conference

27 – 29 July 2011

University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Afrca.

The aim of this conference is to explore various deployments of nostalgia in personal narratives of the past, emphasising its critical and creative possibilities. The conference will bring into conversation a diversity of scholars critically engaged with nostalgia as a means to expand social memory, reclaim and reconfigure subjugated knowledge(s) and experience(s), and to produce new knowledge(s) and new subjectivities. The conference will also endeavour to surface ways in which the nostalgia is employed not only as a means of reconstructing historical knowledge and subjectivities but also as “a set of resources for the future” (Pickering & Keightley 2006, 937).
